Play thank funky music....

I don't remember if I told you that I was a DJ, for about 25 years.

It was undoubtedly, the most enjoyable period of my life. I had to give it up.

When I had my first stroke, the Doctor was looking at my chest x-ray, and he thought I was a two-pack-a-day smoker. I haven't smoked a day in my life.

Of course, I did try it once when I was 11, but I was so afraid my Mom would find out. That I went home in the middle of the day, took a shower, and changed my clothes.

Try explaining that to your Mom. Especially when she would have to make threats, to get me to bathe.

The truth is, I always suspected she knew but decided to cut me some slack. The bottom line, secondhand smoke does, in fact, have a detrimental effect on your health.

Sometimes I reminisce on the music, and the people I met, and the limelight. I played for some pretty famous names in the day: people like Steve Kline, Bob Forcshe, Kelly Chase, Marshal Faulk, Edwin McCain, Michael Jordan, and Grant Wistrom, were among the many who graced my audiences.

I even had the good fortune to play for Grant Wistrom and his lovely wife when they were married, who actually met at one of my shows. During the show when Michael Jordan was in attendance, I played the song from his movie SPACE JAM, "I Believe I Can Fly ", he looked at me, wagged his finger, and smiled.

Since I was a karaoke DJ, I got Edwin McCain, to sing his hit song, "I'll Be ". Enough name-dropping.

Even though it was a thrill, to play for all of those people, and many more whose names escape me. My happiest times were being on the stage, in front of my usual crowd, helping them enjoy themselves. To be honest, I was already toying with the idea of quitting.

I was beginning to feel much like a drink pimp.

I loved my work.

The people, the music, the freedom. The information I received on my health, made the choice easy though. It was hard leaving a vocation that I loved so much. It was much easier, once I was made aware of the damage it was doing to my lungs.

My family came first. So there I was, in my late 50's, unemployed, and being a DJ for nearly 25 years, leaving me with no real marketable skills.

I did a little over two years in a factory job. The pay was pretty good, but I finally couldn't take it any longer and ended up at the local Walmart.

The people were nice, although the work wasn't very fulfilling.

I was there for a little over two years, before finding myself in my current state of affairs.

The best advice I can give, not that you asked, is to have yourself a backup career in mind, even if it's way back in your mind.

As the saying goes, If YOU WANT TO HEAR GOD LAUGH, TELL HIM YOUR PLAN! You might think that what your doing now, will be what you're going to do for the rest of your life. But keep in mind that other popular saying. STUFF HAPPENS! Well, at least it begins with an "S"!
