Locked In
I just finished reading the book "LOCKED IN: THE WILL TO SURVIVE, THE RESOLVE TO LIVE ", by Victoria Allen.
The Paralympics gold medalist, and ESPN sports broadcaster.
I found the book, both riveting and inspiring.
I use the word "INSPIRING " even though I saw her do an interview, where she said she didn't like the word inspiring.
If you are reading this Victoria, (as if ) I'm sorry, but you made me cry! That may be why I finished it in three helpings! Victoria became Locked in at the tender young age of 11.
Her story recounts her arduous journey of her being held prisoner essentially, by a system only beginning to understand this horrible condition. Her story is far more devastating than I pray mine ever will get.
But I will say that there were many parallels to my own tale, in almost a year and a half, Locked in Syndrome has had a grip on me. I would have finished the book sooner I'm sure, but I was hindered, especially in the beginning, as nearly every page had me crying out of control.
What some healthcare workers can justify doing to a patient, calling it "helpful ", is in fact evil! It's truly amazing what this 11-year-old, was able to endure.
As I've said before, I met with a few bad apples, but nowhere near what this young warrior was able to endure. What was so inspiring, was that not only was she able to partially able to overcome her Locked in condition and compete in the 2012 Paralympics, where she won several silver medals and a gold, while at the same time, setting a world record!
She went on to not only walk but compete in the 25th season of DANCING WITH THE STARS.
Victoria doesn't seem to have ever learned the meaning of the word "impossible ".
I watched a compilation of her dances and like I said, a few of her interviews. The lady is extremely poised. Seeing her talk, laugh, and dance, gives me hope, that if I work hard enough,
I can improve my situation. I know that ultimately that it is in God's hands, but there is much I can do. And if I ever want to see anywhere near the results that Victoria has seen, it will take more than just laying in this bed and wishing for things to get better. I'm very excited about the prospect of regaining movement, no matter how little.
I am also very enthusiastic about the future in general and the plans that God has for me still. I don't think He is finished with me yet!
Amen brother!
