23 and the connection to Me

This past weekend was busy. A few years ago, I was made aware of a sibling, that I didn't know existed. About the time that my Mom and Dad divorced, my dad had a relationship with another young woman, that resulted in the birth of a young child named Deb. She was adopted and lived a happy life in Indiana, without either one of us knowing that the other existed.

A few years ago, armed with the knowledge that she was adopted, and with the fact that she was possibly a twin. Deb set out to find her sibling. She did so by submitting her DNA, and while she didn't get the results she was expecting. She was led to my father, who she had been told had died some 20 years ago. She discovered that not only was he alive, but he had three children, a boy, me, and my two sisters. Half siblings, she wasn't aware of, and who wasn't aware of her. A little more than half a century old at that time, and we all were being made aware of the other's existence.

Deb now had identified her birth father, a half-brother, and two half-sisters. Eventually, we were able to arrange a meeting, which happened to be this past weekend.

When she arrived, and I first saw her, I immediately noticed a family resemblance. As we talked, I heard each of my sisters in her voice and saw each of them in her expressions and mannerisms. The visit was laid back and not awkward to me at all.

I found Deb to be a very caring and giving woman, and my only regret was that I had spent my life, not knowing of her existence. That, and the fact that she lives two states away.

Despite all that, it was a good visit. I learned much about her life and got to meet her husband, Tony. I can't wait to see them again.

It's funny, you think you've got your life all figured out, then after 60 years something that turns it upside down comes along. Luckily, something happened to be a blessing.

I hope that I have many more years left, in which to get to know my newly found sister and her family. I was lucky enough to get to see them, a couple of times over the weekend, plus my Sister Pam. We got to hear Deb play the violin. She's an instructor for young kids for free. She even gives them all free violins! Now that's amazing! Have you ever priced a violin? They were not cheap!

So I'll start to plan for the next time I get to see her. An event I do not yet have scheduled, but already I have started to anticipate! Maybe next time, I will travel to see her!
